Humpback Whale and Southern Right Whale Migration, Free Colouring Page

It’s so exciting!! We have just had the first sighting for the season off Ocean Grove, Victoria!!  “What season?” I hear you ask… Whale Migration Season.

During Winter in Australia from around June through to August, we can see Humpback Whales and Southern Right Whales travelling along the Victorian coastline on their migration up the coast to Queensland. The migration is to breed, calve (give birth) and nurture their babies (known as a calf) in the warm waters. Here the calves can learn and grow in size and strength before they journey back down the coast around September to November, on their return to the Southern waters of Antarctica. We’ve created a Free Colouring Page of a Humpback Whale and Southern Right Whale. Can you spot the differences between the two species? The differences are listed below the Colouring page.

Differences you can spot between the two whale species on the colouring page are:

  • The Humpback Whale has a dorsal fin on it’s back but the Southern Right Whale does not.
  • The Humpback Whale has very long pectoral fins on the side of it’s body but the Southern Right Whale has shorter, wide pectoral fins.
  • The Humpback Whale has grooves down under its throat so it can expand when feeding but the Southern Right Whale does not.

We hope you get to go to the beach and try spotting a Whale during the migration season.
