Did you know that many Penguin populations are decreasing every year?

Some reasons for this are: habitat loss or destruction, pollution from plastics to oil spills, depletion of food sources from climate change and overfishing from humans, and death by introduced species eg cats, dogs and foxes.

So what can we do to help these amazing creatures? You may not have a Penguin colony living on your nearest beach or coastline but we can still do something.

  • Next time you visit a beach take a bag and collect any rubbish that may have washed up or been left behind.
  • Buy fish from sustainable fisheries.
  • Help reduce climate change by:  - Recycling & composting instead of putting everything in the garbage. - Use reusable bags/containers instead of single use plastics. -Take short showers to conserve water. - Turn off lights when you leave a room to save energy. - Plant a tree to help capture carbon dioxide.
  • On beaches where Penguins nest make sure you don’t disturb their nesting sites. If you want to see them waddle from the ocean at sunset then stay well back, sit quietly in the fading light, and don’t use any torches or flash photography.
  • Keep your dogs on a leash and cats away from areas where there are Penguins.
